Details
A vulnerability has been found in Oracle HTTP Server 11.1.1.6.0/11.1.1.7.0/11.1.2.1 (Web Server) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component OSSL Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the SSLv2 support in Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) before 3.11.5, as used by Firefox before 1.5.0.10 and 2.x before 2.0.0.2, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.10, SeaMonkey before 1.0.8, and certain Sun Java System server products before 20070611, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via invalid "Client Master Key" length values.
The weakness was disclosed 01/14/2014 by regenrecht with Oracle as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - January 2014 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at oracle.com. This vulnerability can be exploited via HTTPS. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-0009 since 12/19/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24748 (Mozilla Thunderbird < 1.5.0.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156209 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Thunderbird (ELSA-2007:0078)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8954.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (32663), Tenable (24748), SecurityFocus (BID 64758†), OSVDB (32106†) and Secunia (SA24253†). The entries VDB-2704, VDB-2943, VDB-2963 and VDB-6095 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
