A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). This affects the function locations.hostname of the component DOM Property Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. Mozilla based browsers, including Firefox before 1.5.0.10 and 2.x before 2.0.0.2, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.8, allow remote attackers to bypass the same origin policy, steal cookies, and conduct other attacks by writing a URI with a null byte to the hostname (location.hostname) DOM property, due to interactions with DNS resolver code.
The weakness was presented 02/15/2007 by Michal Zalewski as Bug 370445 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-0981 since 02/15/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at lists.grok.org.uk. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24703 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2007:0077)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156209 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Thunderbird (ELSA-2007:0078)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5174.
