A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Opera Web Browser 9.x (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Charset Inheritance Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Mozilla Firefox before 1.5.0.10 and 2.x before 2.0.0.2, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.8 ignores trailing invalid HTML characters in attribute names, which allows remote attackers to bypass content filters that use regular expressions.

The weakness was presented 02/26/2007 by Stefan Esser (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at hardened-php.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0995 since 02/16/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24703 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2007:0077)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156209 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Thunderbird (ELSA-2007:0078)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8954.
