A vulnerability has been found in Oracle Java SE 5.0u55/6u65/7u45 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component JAAS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Java SE 5.0u55, 6u65, and 7u45; Java SE Embedded 7u45; and OpenJDK 7 allows remote attackers to affect integrity via vectors related to JAAS. NOTE: the previous information is from the January 2014 CPU. Oracle has not commented on third-party claims that the issue is related to how principals are set for the Subject class, which allows attackers to escape the sandbox using deserialization of a crafted Subject instance.
The weakness was disclosed 01/14/2014 with Oracle as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - January 2014 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at oracle.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0416 since 12/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72298 (Amazon Linux AMI : java-1.7.0-openjdk (ALAS-2014-280)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350462 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for java-1.6.0-openjdk: ALAS-2014-283).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
