The weakness was disclosed 01/14/2014 with Oracle as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - January 2014 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. This vulnerability can be exploited via the mysql protocol. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0412 since 12/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72946 (Amazon Linux AMI : mysql51 (ALAS-2014-298)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19878 (Oracle MySQL January 2014 Critical Patch Update).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
