The weakness was disclosed 01/14/2014 with Oracle as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - January 2014 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at oracle.com. This vulnerability can be exploited via the mysql protocol. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-0420 since 12/12/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72863 (CentOS 6 : mysql55-mysql (CESA-2014:0173)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19878 (Oracle MySQL January 2014 Critical Patch Update).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
