Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple macOS up to 10.13.6 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
System software utilizing Lazy FP state restore technique on systems using Intel Core-based microprocessors may potentially allow a local process to infer data from another process through a speculative execution side channel.
The bug was discovered 06/13/2018. The weakness was presented 07/09/2018 by Colin Percival with Amazon as HT208937 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-3665 since 12/28/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. The advisory points out:
Lazy FP state restore instead of eager save and restore of the state upon a context switch. Lazy restored states are potentially vulnerable to exploits where one process may infer register values of other processes through a speculative execution side channel that infers their value.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110624 (Debian DSA-4232-1 : xen - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 390158 (Oracle VM Server for x86 Security Update for xen (OVMSA-2018-0272)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (110624) and SecurityFocus (BID 104460†). See VDB-110197, VDB-110288, VDB-110317 and VDB-111303 for similar entries. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
