A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Zoho ManageEngine Applications Manager 12/13 (Log Management Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the component Property Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. In ManageEngine Applications Manager 12 and 13, an authenticated user is able to alter all of their own properties, including own group, i.e. changing their group to one with higher privileges like "ADMIN". A user is also able to change properties of another user, e.g. change another user's password.
The bug was discovered 04/04/2017. The weakness was disclosed 07/13/2018 by Lukasz Juszczyk as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9489 since 11/21/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 465 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13202 (Zoho ManageEngine Applications Manager Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
