A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Zoho ManageEngine Applications Manager 12/13 (Log Management Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Java Object Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deserialization vulnerability. ManageEngine Applications Manager 12 and 13, allows unserialization of unsafe Java objects. The vulnerability can be exploited by remote user without authentication and it allows to execute remote code compromising the application as well as the operating system. As Application Manager's RMI registry is running with privileges of system administrator, by exploiting this vulnerability an attacker gains highest privileges on the underlying operating system.
The bug was discovered 04/04/2017. The weakness was published 07/13/2018 by Lukasz Juszczyk as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-9498 since 11/21/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 465 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
