Details
A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block in the library epan/tvbuff_zlib.c of the component zlib Compression. The manipulation as part of a Negative Length leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In Wireshark 2.6.0 to 2.6.1, 2.4.0 to 2.4.7, and 2.2.0 to 2.2.15, dissectors that support zlib decompression could crash. This was addressed in epan/tvbuff_zlib.c by rejecting negative lengths to avoid a buffer over-read.
The bug was discovered 07/18/2018. The weakness was published 07/19/2018 as Bug 14675 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugs.wireshark.org.
