Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the file epan/dissectors/packet-ber.c of the component ASN.1 BER Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In Wireshark 2.6.0 to 2.6.1, 2.4.0 to 2.4.7, and 2.2.0 to 2.2.15, the ASN.1 BER dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-ber.c by ensuring that length values do not exceed the maximum signed integer.
The bug was discovered 07/18/2018. The weakness was presented 07/19/2018 as Bug 14682 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-14343 since 07/17/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
