A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as critical. In Wireshark 2.6.0 to 2.6.1, 2.4.0 to 2.4.7, and 2.2.0 to 2.2.15, the ISMP dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-ismp.c by validating the IPX address length to avoid a buffer over-read.
The bug was discovered 07/18/2018. The weakness was shared 07/19/2018 as Bug 14672 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugs.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-14344 since 07/17/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
