Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). This issue affects an unknown code of the component EXT4 File System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's ext4 filesystem. A local user can cause an out-of-bounds write and a denial of service or unspecified other impact is possible by mounting and operating a crafted ext4 filesystem image.
The bug was discovered 06/13/2018. The weakness was released 07/26/2018 by ERNE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at patchwork.ozlabs.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-10878 since 05/09/2018. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 35 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111165 (Debian DLA-1423-1 : linux-4.9 new package (Spectre)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 256510 (CentOS Security Update for kernel (CESA-2018:3083)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
