Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.17.10 (Operating System). This affects the function io_ctl_map_page of the file fs/btrfs/tree-checker.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel through 4.17.10. There is an invalid pointer dereference in io_ctl_map_page() when mounting and operating a crafted btrfs image, because of a lack of block group item validation in check_leaf_item in fs/btrfs/tree-checker.c.
The bug was discovered 07/02/2018. The weakness was disclosed 07/27/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-14613 since 07/26/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117988 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2018-1140)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171812 (OpenSUSE Security Update for the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2018:3071-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
