Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in pycsw up to 1.8.5/1.10.4/2.0.1. This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A SQL injection vulnerability in pycsw all versions before 2.0.2, 1.10.5 and 1.8.6 that leads to read and extract of any data from any table in the pycsw database that the database user has access to. Also on PostgreSQL (at least) it is possible to perform updates/inserts/deletes and database modifications to any table the database user has access to.
The bug was discovered 11/06/2016. The weakness was presented 08/01/2018 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-8640 since 10/12/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 633 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 254365 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2016-8640), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
