CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Nagios up to 4.2.x (Log Management Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file daemon-init.in of the component Symbolic Link Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A privilege escalation vulnerability was found in nagios 4.2.x that occurs in daemon-init.in when creating necessary files and insecurely changing the ownership afterwards. It's possible for the local attacker to create symbolic links before the files are to be created and possibly escalating the privileges with the ownership change.

The bug was discovered 11/08/2016. The weakness was shared 08/01/2018 as EDB-ID 40774 as confirmed exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-8641 since 10/12/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Vincent Malguy and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 105 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97269 (GLSA-201702-26 : Nagios: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171643 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for nagios (SUSE-SU-2018:3240-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (40774), Tenable (97269) and SecurityFocus (BID 95121†). The entries VDB-96983, VDB-99125, VDB-121379 and VDB-121380 are related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
