A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.16 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function irda_bind of the file net/irda/af_irda.c. Memory leak in the irda_bind function in net/irda/af_irda.c and later in drivers/staging/irda/net/af_irda.c in the Linux kernel before 4.17 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by repeatedly binding an AF_IRDA socket.
The bug was discovered 09/04/2018. The weakness was disclosed 09/04/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at spinics.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-6554 since 02/01/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 4.17 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
