Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apple iOS up to 7.0.5 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function SSLVerifySignedServerKeyExchange of the component SSL Handler. The manipulation as part of a Common Name Field leads to a input validation vulnerability (goto fail). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
The SSLVerifySignedServerKeyExchange function in libsecurity_ssl/lib/sslKeyExchange.c in the Secure Transport feature in the Data Security component in Apple iOS 6.x before 6.1.6 and 7.x before 7.0.6, Apple TV 6.x before 6.0.2, and Apple OS X 10.9.x before 10.9.2 does not check the signature in a TLS Server Key Exchange message, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof SSL servers by (1) using an arbitrary private key for the signing step or (2) omitting the signing step.
The weakness was published 02/21/2014 with Apple as HT6147 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-1266 since 01/08/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/09/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception. Responsible for the vulnerability is the following code:
if ((err = SSLHashSHA1.update(&hashCtx, &serverRandom)) != 0) goto fail; if ((err = SSLHashSHA1.update(&hashCtx, &signedParams)) != 0) goto fail; goto fail; if ((err = SSLHashSHA1.final(&hashCtx, &hashOut)) != 0) goto fail;
It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72687 (Mac OS X 10.9.x < 10.9.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121815 (Apple Mac OS X v10.9.2 and Security Update 2014-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2014-02-25-1)). ZDNet mentions: "There is speculation that this vulnerability, coupled with automatic updates over SSL, may have been one of the ways that the NSA could access "any iOS device" — a claim made in leaked Snowden-NSA documents, one that Apple vehemently denied."
Upgrading to version 6.1.6 or 7.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at support.apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
Secure Transport failed to validate the authenticity of the connection. This issue was addressed by restoring missing validation steps.Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13769.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91367), Tenable (72687), SecurityFocus (BID 65738†), OSVDB (103583†) and Secunia (SA57061†).
