The IGMP implementation on Cisco Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) devices 4.x, 5.x, 6.x, 7.0 before 7.0.250.0, 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3, when IGMPv3 Snooping is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory over-read and device restart) via a crafted field in an IGMPv3 message, aka Bug ID CSCuh33240.
The weakness was shared 03/05/2014 with Cisco as cisco-sa-20140305-wlc as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tools.cisco.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-0704 since 01/02/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
When messages are processed, the IGMP subsystem may perform a memory over-read. When subsequent processing is performed on the extraneous data an error may occur that results in a reload of the device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by injecting a malicious IGMP version 3 message onto the network that will be received and processed by an affected WLC. An exploit could allow the attacker to trigger a critical error on the WLC, resulting in a DoS condition while the device restarts.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73018 (Multiple Vulnerabilities in Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers (cisco-sa-20140305-wlc)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38638 (Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Multiple Vulnerabilities.).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at tools.cisco.com. Applying the patch cisco-sa-20140305-wlc is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at tools.cisco.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
