Summary
A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark and classified as problematic. This affects an unknown part of the component NFS Dissector. The manipulation leads to input validation. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2014-2281. Furthermore, an exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects an unknown part of the component NFS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The nfs_name_snoop_add_name function in epan/dissectors/packet-nfs.c in the NFS dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.13 and 1.10.x before 1.10.6 does not validate a certain length value, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted NFS packet.
The weakness was published 03/07/2014 by Moshe Kaplan as wnpa-sec-2014-01 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-2281 since 03/05/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75295 (openSUSE Security Update : wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2014:0382-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350398 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2014-330).
Upgrading to version 1.8.13 or 1.10.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91666), Tenable (75295), SecurityFocus (BID 66066†), Secunia (SA57265†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1029907†). Similar entries are available at VDB-11075, VDB-11085, VDB-11086 and VDB-11088. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
