A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file epan/dissectors/packet-rlc of the component RLC Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
epan/dissectors/packet-rlc in the RLC dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.13 and 1.10.x before 1.10.6 uses inconsistent memory-management approaches, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (use-after-free error and application crash) via a crafted UMTS Radio Link Control packet.
The weakness was disclosed 03/07/2014 as wnpa-sec-2014-03 as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-2283 since 03/05/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73277 (CentOS 6 : wireshark (CESA-2014:0342)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350398 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2014-330).
Upgrading to version 1.8.13 or 1.10.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
