Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block of the component Multithreading. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel through 4.19, a use-after-free can occur due to a race condition between fanout_add from setsockopt and bind on an AF_PACKET socket. This issue exists because of the 15fe076edea787807a7cdc168df832544b58eba6 incomplete fix for a race condition. The code mishandles a certain multithreaded case involving a packet_do_bind unregister action followed by a packet_notifier register action. Later, packet_release operates on only one of the two applicable linked lists. The attacker can achieve Program Counter control.
The bug was discovered 08/15/2018. The weakness was shared 10/22/2018 by Hao Liu (Website). The advisory is shared for download at blogs.securiteam.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-18559 since 10/22/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 68 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121450 (RHEL 7 : kernel-rt (RHSA-2019:0188)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237102 (Red Hat Update for kernel (RHSA-2019:0163)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (121450) and SecurityFocus (BID 102390†). The entries VDB-110520, VDB-111442, VDB-111443 and VDB-111444 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
