Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Red Hat GlusterFS up to 3.1.2/4.1.4. This issue affects the function setxattr(2). The manipulation of the argument GF_XATTR_IOSTATS_DUMP_KEY with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Gluster file system through versions 4.1.4 and 3.1.2 is vulnerable to a denial of service attack via use of the 'GF_XATTR_IOSTATS_DUMP_KEY' xattr. A remote, authenticated attacker could exploit this by mounting a Gluster volume and repeatedly calling 'setxattr(2)' to trigger a state dump and create an arbitrary number of files in the server's runtime directory.
The bug was discovered 10/31/2018. The weakness was presented 10/30/2018 by Michael Hanselmann as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-14659 since 07/27/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
