net-snmp 5.4 AgentX Subagent Multi-Object Request input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in net-snmp 5.4. Affected is an unknown function of the component AgentX Subagent. The manipulation as part of Multi-Object Request leads to input validation. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2014-2310. Additionally, an exploit exists. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in net-snmp 5.4 (Network Management Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component AgentX Subagent. The manipulation as part of a Multi-Object Request leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The AgentX subagent in Net-SNMP before 5.4.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (hang) by sending a multi-object request with an Object ID (OID) containing more subids than previous requests, a different vulnerability than CVE-2012-6151.

The weakness was released 03/14/2014 by Vincent Bernat as net-snmp agentx incorrect handling of multi-object requests DoS as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-2310 since 03/06/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

It was found that the AgentX subagent of net-snmp can be stalled when a manager sends a multi-object request with a different number of subids. From the Debian bug report: This happens if one of the requested OID is larger than the previous one.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73511 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : net-snmp (SAT Patch Number 9015)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122657 (Solaris 11.2 Support Repository Update (SRU) 2.5.0 Missing).

Upgrading to version 5.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at sourceforge.net. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:

The bug is fixed upstream for the 5.4 branch in 5.4.4. From the upstream bug report this was also fixed in the 5.3 branch but I don't know on what specific version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91921), Tenable (73511), SecurityFocus (BID 66005†), Secunia (SA57870†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44806†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-70727 and VDB-78825. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
