Net-SNMP 5.7.1 and earlier, when AgentX is registering to handle a MIB and processing GETNEXT requests, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash or infinite loop, CPU consumption, and hang) by causing the AgentX subagent to timeout.
The weakness was published 10/21/2015 by Ken Farnen as HT205375 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-6151 since 12/06/2012. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Multiple issues existed in netsnmp version 5.6. These issues were addressed by using patches affecting OS X from upstream.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73173 (Oracle Linux 5 : net-snmp (ELSA-2014-0322)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122747 (Solaris 11.2 Support Repository Update (SRU) 3.4.1 Missing).
Upgrading to version 10.11.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
