Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 3.14-rc7 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function skb_zerocopy of the file net/netfilter/nfnetlink_queue_core.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Use-after-free vulnerability in the nfqnl_zcopy function in net/netfilter/nfnetlink_queue_core.c in the Linux kernel through 3.13.6 allows attackers to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory by leveraging the absence of a certain orphaning operation. NOTE: the affected code was moved to the skb_zerocopy function in net/core/skbuff.c before the vulnerability was announced.
The weakness was released 03/20/2014 by Zoltan Kiss with Citrix as kernel: net: potential information leak when ubuf backed skbs are skb_zerocopy()ied as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-2568 since 03/20/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Once the source skb is consumed, ubuf destructor is called and potentially releases the corresponding userspace buffers, which can then for example be repurposed, while the destination skb is still pointing to the them.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74360 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS : linux vulnerabilities (USN-2240-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168480 (OpenSuSE Security Update for the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2016:0301-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lkml.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
