An issue was discovered in Roche Accu-Chek Inform II Base Unit / Base Unit Hub before 03.01.04 and CoaguChek / cobas h232 Handheld Base Unit before 03.01.04. Insecure permissions in a service interface may allow authenticated attackers in the adjacent network to execute arbitrary commands on the operating system.
The bug was discovered 11/06/2018. The weakness was published 11/08/2018 by Niv Yehezkel with Medigate as ICSMA-18-310-01 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at ics-cert.us-cert.gov. The public release has been coordinated with Roche. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-18561 since 10/22/2018. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 03.01.04 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
