Affected by this issue is the function xProcessReceivedUDPPacket/prvParseDNSReply of the component DNS Response Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a confused deputy vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-441. The product receives a request, message, or directive from an upstream component, but the product does not sufficiently preserve the original source of the request before forwarding the request to an external actor that is outside of the product's control sphere. This causes the product to appear to be the source of the request, leading it to act as a proxy or other intermediary between the upstream component and the external actor. An issue was discovered in Amazon Web Services (AWS) FreeRTOS through 1.3.1, FreeRTOS up to V10.0.1 (with FreeRTOS+TCP), and WITTENSTEIN WHIS Connect middleware TCP/IP component. In xProcessReceivedUDPPacket and prvParseDNSReply, any received DNS response is accepted, without confirming it matches a sent DNS request.

The bug was discovered 10/18/2018. The weakness was released 12/06/2018 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-16598 since 09/06/2018.
