A vulnerability classified as critical was found in LibRaw up to 0.18.6 (Image Processing Software). This vulnerability affects the function LibRaw::kodak_ycbcr_load_raw of the file internal/dcraw_common.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. An off-by-one error within the "LibRaw::kodak_ycbcr_load_raw()" function (internal/dcraw_common.cpp) in LibRaw versions prior to 0.18.7 can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow and subsequently cause a crash.
The bug was discovered 01/29/2018. The weakness was published 12/07/2018 by Laurent Delosieres with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-5800 since 01/19/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 17 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. Upgrading to version 0.18.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
