A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in LibRaw up to 0.18.6 (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function kodak_radc_load_raw of the file internal/dcraw_common.cpp. The manipulation of the argument buf as part of a Variable leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. An error within the "kodak_radc_load_raw()" function (internal/dcraw_common.cpp) related to the "buf" variable in LibRaw versions prior to 0.18.7 can be exploited to cause an out-of-bounds read memory access and subsequently cause a crash.
The bug was discovered 01/29/2018. The weakness was disclosed 12/07/2018 by Laurent Delosieres with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-5802 since 01/19/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 17 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106855 (FreeBSD : libraw -- multiple DoS vulnerabilities (6f0b0cbf-1274-11e8-8b5b-4ccc6adda413)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237014 (Red Hat Update for libkdcraw (RHSA-2018:3065)).
Upgrading to version 0.18.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
