A vulnerability was found in Google Chrome up to 70.0.3538.110 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function Reflect.construct of the component v8. The manipulation as part of a HTML Page leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. Incorrect handling of Reflect.construct in V8 in Google Chrome prior to 71.0.3578.80 allowed a remote attacker to perform an out of bounds memory read via a crafted HTML page.
The bug was discovered 12/04/2018. The weakness was shared 12/11/2018 by Guang Gong with Qihoo 360 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at chromereleases.googleblog.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-18359 since 10/15/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119568 (RHEL 6 : chromium-browser (RHSA-2018:3803)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 71.0.3578.80 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
