Details
A vulnerability was found in QEMU up to 3.0.x (Virtualization Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function usb_mtp_write_data of the file hw/usb/dev-mtp.c of the component Media Transfer Protocol. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A flaw was found in qemu Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) before version 3.1.0. A path traversal in the in usb_mtp_write_data function in hw/usb/dev-mtp.c due to an improper filename sanitization. When the guest device is mounted in read-write mode, this allows to read/write arbitrary files which may lead do DoS scenario OR possibly lead to code execution on the host.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2018. The weakness was released 12/12/2018 by Michael Hanselmann (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-16867 since 09/11/2018. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209571 (Oracle Linux 8 : virt:kvm_utils3 (ELSA-2024-12792)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197406 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qemu Vulnerabilities (USN-3923-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (209571) and SecurityFocus (BID 106195†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-128069 and VDB-131004. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
