Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in QEMU up to 3.1.0 (Virtualization Software). Affected is the function i2c_ddc of the file hw/i2c/i2c-ddc.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
QEMU, through version 2.10 and through version 3.1.0, is vulnerable to an out-of-bounds read of up to 128 bytes in the hw/i2c/i2c-ddc.c:i2c_ddc() function. A local attacker with permission to execute i2c commands could exploit this to read stack memory of the qemu process on the host.
The bug was discovered 02/18/2019. The weakness was shared 02/19/2019 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-3812 since 01/03/2019. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209571 (Oracle Linux 8 : virt:kvm_utils3 (ELSA-2024-12792)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197406 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qemu Vulnerabilities (USN-3923-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
