Details
A vulnerability was found in FasterXML jackson-databind up to 2.9.6 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function blaze-ds-opt/blaze-ds-core of the component Deserialization. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deserialization vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-502. The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently verifying that the resulting data will be valid. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
FasterXML jackson-databind 2.x before 2.9.7 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by leveraging failure to block the blaze-ds-opt and blaze-ds-core classes from polymorphic deserialization.
The bug was discovered 07/27/2018. The weakness was published 01/02/2019 (GitHub Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-14719 since 07/28/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 159 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121251 (Oracle Primavera Unifier Multiple Vulnerabilities (Jan 2019 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176635 (Debian Security Update for jackson-databind (DLA 1703-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.9.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (121251) and SecurityFocus (BID 106601†). Similar entries are available at VDB-125389, VDB-125417, VDB-128614 and VDB-128616. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
