Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Google Chrome 34.0.1847.115 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function base64decodeinternal of the file wtf/text/base64.cpp of the component Windows Property Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The base64DecodeInternal function in wtf/text/Base64.cpp in Blink, as used in Google Chrome before 34.0.1847.116, does not properly handle string data composed exclusively of whitespace characters, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a window.atob method call.

The weakness was presented 04/08/2014 by Christian Holler (Cloudfuzzer) with Google as Stable Channel Update as confirmed release notes (Website). The advisory is shared at googlechromereleases.blogspot.dk. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-1725 since 01/29/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/10/2026). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73431 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (963413a5-bf50-11e3-a2d6-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166973 (OpenSuSE Security Update for chromium (openSUSE-SU-2014:0601-1)).

Upgrading to version 34.0.1847.116 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
