A vulnerability was found in GNU elfutils 0.175 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ebl_object_note of the file eblobjnote.c. The manipulation as part of a ELF File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. In elfutils 0.175, there is a buffer over-read in the ebl_object_note function in eblobjnote.c in libebl. Remote attackers could leverage this vulnerability to cause a denial-of-service via a crafted elf file, as demonstrated by eu-readelf.
The bug was discovered 01/29/2019. The weakness was presented 01/29/2019 (Website). The advisory is available at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-7146 since 01/28/2019.
