A vulnerability was found in elfutils 0.175. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function elf_cvt_note of the file libelf/note_xlate.h. In elfutils 0.175, a negative-sized memcpy is attempted in elf_cvt_note in libelf/note_xlate.h because of an incorrect overflow check. Crafted elf input causes a segmentation fault, leading to denial of service (program crash).
The bug was discovered 02/10/2019. The weakness was released 02/09/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-7664 since 02/09/2019. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
