A vulnerability was found in elfutils 0.175. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function elf32_xlatetom of the file elf32_xlatetom.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. In elfutils 0.175, a heap-based buffer over-read was discovered in the function elf32_xlatetom in elf32_xlatetom.c in libelf. A crafted ELF input can cause a segmentation fault leading to denial of service (program crash) because ebl_core_note does not reject malformed core file notes.
The bug was discovered 02/10/2019. The weakness was disclosed 02/09/2019 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-7665 since 02/09/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277651 (Fedora Security Update for elfutils (FEDORA-2019-44a9d99647)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
