A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's ext4 filesystem. A local user can cause an out-of-bound write in in fs/jbd2/transaction.c code, a denial of service, and a system crash by unmounting a crafted ext4 filesystem image.
The bug was discovered 06/17/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/07/2019 as Android Security Bulletin - January 2019 as confirmed security bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at source.android.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-10882 since 05/09/2018. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 40 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117800 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:2858-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
