A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 7.1.26/7.2.15/7.3.2 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function exif_process_IFD_in_MAKERNOTE of the component EXIF. The manipulation of the argument data_len as part of a Variable leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. An issue was discovered in the EXIF component in PHP before 7.1.27, 7.2.x before 7.2.16, and 7.3.x before 7.3.3. There is an uninitialized read in exif_process_IFD_in_MAKERNOTE because of mishandling the data_len variable.
The bug was discovered 03/12/2019. The weakness was presented 03/09/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-9639 since 03/08/2019. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
