CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in libpng up to 1.5.13 (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function png_set_unknown_chunks of the file libpng/pngset.c of the component Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in the png_set_unknown_chunks function in libpng/pngset.c in libpng before 1.5.14beta08 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault and crash) via a crafted image, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

The weakness was disclosed 04/10/2014 as CVE-2013-7353 CVE-2013-7354 libpng integer overflows as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-7353 since 04/10/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74210 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : libpng (SAT Patch Number 9170)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166976 (OpenSuSE Security Update for libpng12 (openSUSE-SU-2014:0604-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.5.14beta08 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at sourceforge.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:

The vendor mentions that internal calls use safe values. These issues could potentially affect applications that use the libpng API. Apparently no such applications were identified as part of the work on bug 199.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93127), Tenable (74210), SecurityFocus (BID 67345†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44550†). The entry VDB-13213 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
