Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in libpng up to 1.5.13 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function png_set_text_2 of the component Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple integer overflows in libpng before 1.5.14rc03 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted image to the (1) png_set_sPLT or (2) png_set_text_2 function, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was presented 04/10/2014 as CVE-2013-7353 CVE-2013-7354 libpng integer overflows as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-7354 since 04/10/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73976 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : libpng (MDVSA-2014:084)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166976 (OpenSuSE Security Update for libpng12 (openSUSE-SU-2014:0604-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.5.14beta08 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at sourceforge.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:
The vendor mentions that internal calls use safe values. These issues could potentially affect applications that use the libpng API. Apparently no such applications were identified as part of the work on bug 199.
