Microsoft Office 2013 Gold, SP1, RT, and RT SP1 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive token information via a web site that sends a crafted response during opening of an Office document, aka "Token Reuse Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 10/11/2012. The weakness was presented 05/13/2014 by Arnaud Maillet with ANSSI as MS14-023 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-1808 since 01/29/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 579 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73982 (MS14-023: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2961037)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110237 (Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS14-023)).

Applying the patch MS14-023 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
