A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2007/2010/2013 (Office Suite Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing in the library MSCOMCTL.OCX of the component Common Control Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The MSCOMCTL library in Microsoft Office 2007 SP3, 2010 SP1 and SP2, and 2013 Gold, SP1, RT, and RT SP1 makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass the ASLR protection mechanism via a crafted web site, as exploited in the wild in May 2014, aka "MSCOMCTL ASLR Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 01/30/2007. The weakness was shared 05/13/2014 with Microsoft as MS14-024 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1809 since 01/29/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2660 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73983 (MS14-024: Vulnerability in a Microsoft Common Control Could Allow Security Feature Bypass (2961033)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110236 (Microsoft Windows Common Control Security Bypass Vulnerability (MS14-024)).
Applying the patch MS14-024 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
