A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft .NET Framework up to 4.5.1 (Programming Language Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component TypeFilterLevel Check. The .NET Remoting implementation in Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1, 2.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4, 4.5, and 4.5.1 does not properly restrict memory access, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving malformed objects, aka "TypeFilterLevel Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 05/13/2014 by James Forshaw with Context Information Security as MS14-026 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1806 since 01/29/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by James Forshaw and been published 7 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73985 (MS14-026: Vulnerability in .NET Framework Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2958732)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90952 (Microsoft .NET Framework .Net Remoting Elevation of Privileges (MS14-026)).
Applying the patch MS14-026 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
