A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function ShellExecute of the component Shell Handler. The ShellExecute API in Windows Shell in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, and Windows RT Gold and 8.1 does not properly implement file associations, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, as exploited in the wild in May 2014, aka "Windows Shell File Association Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2014 with Microsoft as MS14-027 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-1807 since 01/29/2014. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
