Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1 and Server 2012 Gold and R2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (iSCSI service outage) by sending many crafted packets, aka "iSCSI Target Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 05/13/2014 by SecuriTeam with Beyond Security's SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure as MS14-028 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure. The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0255 since 12/03/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
Servers with the iSCSI target role enabled are affected.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73987 (MS14-028: Vulnerabilities in iSCSI Could Allow Denial of Service (2962485)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90953 (Microsoft Windows iSCSI Target Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS14-028)).
Applying the patch MS14-028 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com.It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling tcp/3260 (iSCSI). The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16266.
