Linux Foundation Xen 4.4.0 Xen Tools DTB Kernel memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.4.0. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component Xen Tools. The manipulation as part of DTB Kernel results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2014-3715. There is not any exploit available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.4.0 (Virtualization Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the component Xen Tools. The manipulation as part of a DTB Kernel leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in Xen 4.4.x allows local users to read system memory or cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted 32-bit guest kernel, related to searching for an appended DTB.

The weakness was released 05/14/2014 by Thomas Leonard as XSA-95 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xenbits.xenproject.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-3715 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

Furthermore when checking a 32-bit guest kernel for an appended DTB, the Xen tools were prone to additional overruns also leading to an overrun on the input buffer when loading the kernel into guest RAM

Applying the patch xsa95.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xenproject.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93150), SecurityFocus (BID 67388†), SecurityTracker (ID 1030252†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44569†).
