Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.4.0 (Virtualization Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component Xen Tools. The manipulation as part of a DTB Header leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Xen 4.4.x does not properly check alignment, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) via an unspecified field in a DTB header in a 32-bit guest kernel.
The weakness was disclosed 05/14/2014 by Thomas Leonard as XSA-95 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xenproject.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3716 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
Also, the tools would access a field in the putative DTB header without checking for its alignment
Applying the patch xsa95.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xenproject.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93151), SecurityFocus (BID 67388†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030252†). Additional details are provided at openwall.com.
