Details
A vulnerability was found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU 1.7.0 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file hpet.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in hw/timer/hpet.c in QEMU before 1.7.2 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to the number of timers.
The weakness was released 02/18/2014 by Petr Matousek as Bug 1066347 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4527 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:
hpet is a VARRAY with a uint8 size but static array of 32 and the index (num_timers ) into this array is not checked for sanity. An user able to alter the savevm data (either on the disk or over the wire during migration) could use this flaw to to corrupt QEMU process memory on the (destination) host, which could potentially result in arbitrary code execution on the host with the privileges of the QEMU process.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74047 (Fedora 20 : qemu-1.6.2-5.fc20 (2014-6288)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168984 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2016:1745-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93228), Tenable (74047), SecurityFocus (BID 67483†), OSVDB (106046†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45699†).
